Exploring Spiritual Awakening

If you’re seeking deeper spiritual knowledge about the workings of the universe, suddenly questioning the reality of the 3D matrix, or feeling called into a more meaningful and purposeful existence, you very well might be experiencing a spiritual awakening.

What is a Spiritual Awakening?

Spiritual Awakening refers to the process that unfolds when an individual expands their level of consciousness to access the higher wisdom and greater truth of our soul origin. This process can happen suddenly or gradually and may spark feelings of bliss, oneness, or joy, in addition to sadness, grief, and loss. As the ego dies, what rises is a burning belief of our infinite and powerful potential as energetic beings.

What causes a Spiritual Awakening?

Sudden Awakening

Certain life-changing events or traumatic experiences can trigger a spontaneous awakening. The affects are more than life-altering; awakenings often result in a complete restructuring of one’s identity and day-to-day lived experiences. The initiating event can vastly differ from person to person, ranging from a near-death experience to the loss of a loved one.

Gradual Awakening

Not all awakening stories begin with a sudden, life-altering event; some can be quiet and subtle, unfolding gradually over time. Practices like mindful meditation, breath-work and even hypnosis can help elevate an individual’s consciousness. In raising one’s vibrational frequency, existential questions like “who am I?” and “where do I come from?” often arise.

Signs of an Awakening

Increased intuition

We are all blessed with intuition (you might call it an inner knowing or gut feeling). During a spiritual awakening, you may find that your senses are heightened; some might experience visions, hear voices, or feel/sense energies on a greater level. The trick is to learn how to discern and decipher the messages that you’re receiving!

Overwhelming feelings of love & oneness

Love and authenticity have higher vibrational frequencies than energies of fear or judgement. When we raise our frequency, we begin to tap into the energies of higher dimensional realms where only love exists. Suddenly, memories of unity consciousness are recovered, calling you back to the state of oneness where your soul was birthed.

Disconnection from the 3D world and/or feelings of loneliness

Unplugging from the 3D matrix can be a lonely experience; you may experience feelings of detachment from your current reality. What you once enjoyed no longer interests you and as you awaken to your cosmic truth, you may feel a separation from the people you love. This is a process of uncovering what truly sparks joy in your new, awakened world.

Lucid and/or prophetic dreams

Lucid dreams are dreams in which you are consciously aware that you are dreaming, often including messages or lessons from your spirit guides and ancestors to assist in some way. Prophetic dreams are dreams in which forecast a potential future event or outcome; prophecies are based on a potential future based on the current energies and are not written in stone (meaning, they may not necessarily come true; often, these are “warnings” from spirit to help redirect you or humanity collectively in some way).

Synchronicities

Synchronicities are beautiful nudges from our guides and ancestors in spirit form reminding us that we are not alone. They happen upon us in many different forms (reoccurring events, words/phrases, images, people, animals, etc.) and are here to validate or guide you on your path in some way.

Superiority complex

As your consciousness expands, it is a natural tendency for many to feel responsible for waking others up. Some might feel judgmental or superior to others as you come to the realization that most of the world is still “asleep” in their waking life. These feelings are usually temporary and fade with time as you realize that everyone is on their own spiritual path and it is no one’s responsibility nor right to wake another up.

Disillusionment

As you disconnect from and dismantle old notions of your perceived reality, you may feel like you’re living in a dream-like state; time will start to feel very malleable. Some might even experience De Ja Vu, the strange feeling that the reality you are currently experiencing has already occurred before.

Stages of Awakening

Important Disclaimers: The awakening process will look and feel different to everyone. What is listed below is largely taken from my own experiences, and does not encapsulate the broad range of what may be witnessed, uncovered, and felt during the process. There is no set time-frame nor linearity in an awakening journey; for many, it will unfold over an entire lifetime and continues to repeat on a cyclical basis.

The Initiation

You’ve woken-up. Though you may not have the words to explain it yet, you are beginning to realize how interconnected the universe really is. Suddenly your love for humanity, animals, and mother earth feels overwhelming. You begin to realize the ways in which the 3D matrix has programmed you to forget how powerful you truly are. Feelings of bliss and joy start to coalesce with feelings of confusion, anger and deep sadness; as you remember the cosmic origins of your soul, you start to grieve the old version of self you once knew. There is no going back to sleep now, only questions that seem to relentlessly call you deeper and deeper into remembering who you really are.

The Query

You start gathering information, drinking it up as if through a firehose. Questioning everything, you begin to satiate yourself with books, podcasts, videos, and articles (this very well might be where you currently are in the process). Each question answered likely sparks a handful of new queries. It is likely in this stage that you begin to create a working knowledge of how energy works, and start playing with the concept of dimensional reality (see “Dimension” definition noted in the terms glossary below). You may even feel pulled into conspiracy theories, dismantling what you always knew to be true. The notion of what’s “real” starts to become very fuzzy.

Some will begin to isolate themselves from friends and family, knowing they’ll likely never understand. Others will urgently try to shake the people around them awake, desperately telling anyone who will listen about the things you’ve learned. It’ll feel like your world is quickly unraveling, like you’re losing your mind (see “Dark Night of the Soul” definition noted in the terms glossary below). In actuality, you are birthing a new beingness; you are becoming more of the “You” that you’ve always been deep inside.

The Quest

Now with a working knowledge of how energy works, you are tasked with transmuting your own density back into pure love consciousness. Intuitive gifts will likely blossom at this time. You will be called into deep healing (see “Shadow Work” definition noted in the terms glossary below), likely pulled into deeper stages of grief. As you examine old wounds and past trauma through a new lens, relationships in your life may begin to (or continue to) shift and potentially dissolve. While your consciousness continues to expand, your physical world may begin to feel smaller and smaller.

The Integration

Your awareness and holistic spiritual understanding starts to blend into your everyday experiences. Your real-world interactions call you to put what you’ve learned into action. Suddenly, you’re setting boundaries, saying no, carving out time for silence and inner-reflection. You begin integrating your knowledge into how you live your life every day. Your daily habits will likely begin to shift; what you once craved (processed foods, tv, social media, toxic relationships) may no longer feel enticing in the same way. A greater purpose and way of life are calling you.

At this stage in the journey, you may feel like there’s some sort of lag time between doing the work to heal and realizing your manifestations in the physical. Some call this liminal space “The Void” (see “The Void” definition noted in the terms glossary below) because it often feels like you’re stuck in between worlds; you are not the same person you once were, but you might not yet see the new path that lies ahead, leading you to your greatest purpose.

The Mission

You are shifting into a new paradigm; with all the insight and experience you’ve gained, you begin to realize and step into your soul’s highest purpose.

For some, this will mean stepping into community leader roles such as healer, therapist, coach, or intuitive guides. Others will simply ground themselves in the present moment, creating the world they wish to experience through modalities like art, food and agriculture, environmentalism, activism, etc. Your new reality begins to unfold.

Glossary of Terms

  • Consciousness — the awareness of one’s existence, thoughts, emotions, and environment. A plant, for example, has less units of consciousness (i.e. the awareness to analyze sunlight, water, temperature) compared to the units of consciousness of a human.
  • Dark Night of the Soul — a painful and difficult period of one’s life marked by the dissolution of previously held beliefs and concepts of the self and of the world around us. This is a sacred initiation into the inner-abyss of the self to bring light to our own darkness, burning away the ego and any false truths we once believed.
  • Dimension — measurement of what can be split. For example, 1 dimensional reality is a measurement of one; in other words, it is depicting one singular understanding (i.e. unity). 2nd dimension would infer there are two perspectives of the one whole, positive or negative. 3rd dimension introduces a third perspective that exists outside of time and space. There are thousands of dimensions, however many will refer to dimensional reality in a linear way (i.e. 3D, 4D, 5D, etc.) to explain the current evolution of earth and humanity at large as we expand consciously.
  • Ego — the sense of self that arises when the mind is completely unaware of itself. An unobserved mind is in fact the ego itself.
  • Frequency — the speed in which energy vibrates or oscillates. Higher frequencies move much quicker and lighter than lower frequencies, which are much slower and denser.
  • Shadow Work — the practice of identifying, exploring, and integrating unconscious, hidden, or repressed parts of our human identity, often referred to as the “shadow self.” Our shadows include residuals left over from previous trauma or painful experiences and can manifest physically in the body as tension, illness, skin irritations, over/under-active organs, etc.
  • “The Void” — a place where space and time do not exist; as you unplug from physical reality and leave everything you know behind, your soul enters the unified field of consciousness. You will no longer be your personality, thoughts, experiences nor emotions; instead, you are connecting to something greater than yourself (some might call this “Source Consciousness” or God). This is where everything becomes possible.
  • Transmutation — the action of changing from one state to another. In the context of energy, this is an alchemical process whereby lower-vibrational energy (such as fear, hate, or pain) is transformed into higher-vibrational energy (such as love, compassion, or peace). Energy cannot be destroyed, it can only be transmuted from one state to another.
